Accountability & Transparency

So-called Strong Mayor Powers are an affront to democracy. Our town council needs to work in unity for the people of Cobourg. Council needs to reflect the needs and wishes of us and not any other outside interests. The return of community citizens' forums and committees can help democratize our local government.

Council meetings should be held at times when working people are available. Community engagement should be conducted in person, not just online, and at venues that can accommodate all those who wish to participate. Council meetings should allow for public engagement on any and all topics that affect Cobourg, including items that would require advocacy to the provincial or federal governments. Delegations should be able to speak to topics that are beyond the mandate of the council, but to which council can advocate for us.

Council meetings should be open to the public whenever possible, with strictly limited in-camera sessions. Analyses and reports created by staff and contracted to third parties should be publicized for residents to readily access well in advance of any council vote or decisions.
